Mother of the Bride: How to Pick the Perfect Gown

While planning your daughter’s wedding, it’s easy to get so wrapped up in helping her that you forget you need time to shop for your own gorgeous dress, too. Shopping for a Mother of the Bride dress can be intimidating—after all, it’s not every day you celebrate your daughter’s marriage, so you want to wear something you love that makes you feel beautiful. Shopping for your dress is a process, so we’re sharing our favorite tips on finding the perfect gown.

Start Early

It’s easy to get so wrapped up in other planning details that you wait until the last minute to find your own dress, but we recommend starting earlier than you think you need to. You’ll want time to alter your dress, make sure the bride loves it too, and give the Mother of the Groom enough time to buy her dress and alter it as well.

Listen to the Bride

Depending on your daughter’s preferences, she may care about what color you wear or your dress’s style. Be sure to talk to her about her vision for the wedding so you have an idea of how formal you should dress for the wedding and what colors will look best with her design style. At the end of the day, you still get the last call on the dress, but since it’s her wedding, her opinion matters as well.

No Need to Match the Bridal Party

While it’s important for your dress to look nice in pictures, there’s no need to get super matchy-matchy with the bridal party. Choose a color that’s going to look nice without matching exactly (unless, of course, the bride asks you to). For example: if the bridesmaids are in light blue, champagne or navy would look beautiful, or if they’re in a bold purple, a silver or light blue dress would look amazing.

Communicate with the Mother of the Groom

It’s traditional for the Mother of the Bride to contact the Mother of the Groom once she finds her dress. While there’s no need to keep to tradition, you should still communicate with the Mother of the Groom so that you wear dresses that somewhat coordinate (same rule as your dress with the bridal party!). This also ensures that you don’t accidentally show up in the same dress or same color!
